This has been an extremely exciting course! I have thoroughly enjoyed learning so many new things! What was the most rewarding to me was the book The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down. I say this because I believed it shined a light on culture in a way that I had never seen before. I also believe that it is the most applicable to my work as a professional. This year I have a variety of cultural backgrounds in my classroom: Hispanic, American, African, German, Jamaican, Chinese and Indian. It is extremely exciting to have such a colorful variety and I believe that this course came at such a timely manner where I am able to apply what I know! I look forward to continuing to grow as I continue to work with various families from various backgrounds.

Hello Whitney,
ReplyDeleteI must say I have enjoyed this course as well. I gained such a different perspective on different cultures and their views on education. I am able to see and understand why they may not engage in their child's learning experience because of the comfort level between the culture and the school. My school is also very diverse in culture and include many ethnic backgrounds such as Nepali, African, Arabic, Caucasian, and African American. In order to make my environment culturally aware, I must embrace each of my students individuality and provide an environment that is conducive to the needs of all. I agree with you that this course came right on time and the information that I learned will transfer into my career as an educator. I wish you the best in your other courses!

Hi Whitney,
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed reading your blog and discussion post this semester. It is wonderful that you have gained better understanding of diverse cultures and how to apply that knowledge to your classroom. The information that was provided in this class is transforming us into the professionals that will have a wider perspective of how to communicate, relate to, and respect diverse cultures. I hope you continue to do well for the remainder of your classes.
Hi Whitney,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your highlights from this course. Yes, I am in agreement with you when you mentioned about the book entitled, "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down." The book gave a new perspective to me on diversity, culture, language, influence and understanding as well. It is great to hear that there are educators like yourself that are willing to go the extra mile and acquire advanced education to ensure students of all ethnicities are successful. Thanks and the best to you!
Whitney,
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you regarding the book that we read. Even though it was at the beginning of the semester, this book has really stayed with me. It has also made me reflect on my interactions when working with students of different cultures. I truly believe that all of us (humans) are more alike than different and that we just need to take time and have the patience to learn about others.
See you in another class,
Sonia Pruneda-Hernandez
ReplyDeletei have enjoyed reading your post.I agree with you on the influence of the book The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down. The same book also prepared me for the diverse class that I have this year. Actually this class prepared me to deal with my parents especially with my parents who are not proficient in English language.
