"Of course children benefit from positive feedback. But praise and rewards are not the only methods of reinforcement. More emphasis should be place on appreciation--reinforcement related explicitly and directly to the content of the child's interest and efforts " Lilian Katz

A picture Drawn By my Four Year Old daughter!
| This photo was drawn by my daughter; she told me that this represents her family. The thing that touched me the most about it is that, she is my first and only child, and I everyday I see something new that she does, she is only four, but I am seeing a lot of "First Time" moments. This is the first time I have seen her create a completely recognizable photo of something that she has said she can draw, and the fact that she drew it of family makes it even more special. |
One of my Most Favorite Children's Books!!!
A STORY ABOUT A CHILD THAT TOUCHED MY HEART
My first year of teaching, I got this new student in my class at the middle of the year. She was very sweet and very quiet. She always made good grades and she was always doing everything that I needed or asked her to. One week came, and she did not come to school for atleast three days out the week back to back, and before I could call to check up on her, her mother called me that day and said, " This is Lacey's mom, (that was not really her name) and I am calling to let you know what is going on with my daughter. She continues to say, "My boyfriend got mad and set our house on fire with all of our clothes and everything else in it." She goes on to say, "None of my daughters have anything to wear and we do not have anywhere to stay." I felt really bad and wondered what I could do to help. The mother was a very involved mother and beyond this issue, I would have NEVER known that there was anything wrong. After this incident, the mother informed me that this was not his first time being violent. Nevertheless, the mom found a way that she could get herself and her daughters some help and they finished out the school year. They moved away after that so that they could be close to family. This taught me a very valuable lesson, it taught me that even when you THINK everything is ok in a child's life, it may not necessarily really be that way. Hindsight, this little girl did used to say how much she enjoyed being at school a lot and it was because she did not like to go home because of what was going on at home. You have to be able to show a deep and sincere concern and care about each and everyone of your students because you never know what they are dealing with at home. Always be aware that any student at any time could be going through something that you do not even have a clue about.
What Fuels My Passion
Every single day, I see children of different backgrounds in my school. Some who have a great support system and some who do not. When a child comes to me and they see more in me than they see in their own mother and can verbally express that to me, that fuels my passion for what I do every single day. I come to my classroom daily wanting to see children just believe in themselves and believe that they can REALLY be anything that they want to be. I have a deep passion about my children, and I believe that noone else should be in this profession unless they have a passion as well.

This is one of my favorite poems that I remember from when I was a child in Elementary School and this year during our Fifth Grade DARE Program at our school, I heard it again and was surprised that students were still reciting this poem so I decided to post it:

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow--
You may succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor's cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out--
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit--
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

New To This
Welcome to my blog! As I embark upon this journey of completing my Master's Degree in Education, I look forward to all the things that I may be able to learn as I go through the different courses that will assist me in achieving that goal. I look forward to working with all of my colleagues to make this a successful process!
